Custom hearing protector devices (CHPDs) improve consistency and reliability for any hearing protection system. Disposable and reusable insert HPDs are often inserted improperly, or part way, thus, reducing the hearing protection NRR value.
Any protector that is inserted properly to achieve a good seal will offer good hearing protection. The question is: WILL the employee insert the HPD deeply enough to achieve a good seal? With the custom-fitted device, there is really only one way to place the protector in the ear without discomfort, thus, the protection factor will be consistent and reliable each time the CHPD is used.
The success of an effective disposable HPD program depends on employee training and supervision. The success of an effective Custom HPD program depends on the laboratory process.
